چکیده

The present understanding of nonperturbative ground states in the fractional quantum Hall effect is based on effective theories of the Jain “composite fermion” excitations. We review the approach based on matrix variables, i.e. D0 branes, originally introduced by Susskind and Polychronakos. We show that the Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix gauge theory provides a matrix generalization of the quantum Hall effect, where the composite-fermion construction naturally follows from gauge invariance. The matrix ground states obtained by suitable projections of higher Landau levels are found to be in one-to-one correspondence with the Laughlin and Jain hierarchical states. The matrix theory possesses a physical limit for commuting matrices that could be reachable while staying in the same phase. ar X iv :0 90 2. 07 65 v1 [ he pth ] 4 F eb 2 00 9 Matrix Effective Theories of the Fractional Quantum Hall effect 2

Non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states and chiral coset conformal field theories

We propose an effective Lagrangian for the low energy bulk theory of the Pfaffian states of the fractional quantum Hall effect in terms of non-Abelian Chern-Simons (CS) actions. Our approach exploits the connection between topological CS and chiral conformal field theories and can be applied to large class of non-Abelian FQH states. CONICET, Argentina CICPBA, Argentina

Quasi-particles in Fractional Quantum Hall Effect Edge Theories

We propose a quasi-particle formulation of effective edge theories for the fractional quantum Hall effect. For the edge of a Laughlin state with filling fraction ν = 1 m , our fundamental quasi-particles are edge electrons of charge −e and edge quasi-holes of charge + e m . These quasi-particles satisfy exclusion statistics in the sense of Haldane. We exploit algebraic properties of edge electr...

Quasi-particles for Quantum Hall Edges A

We discuss a quasi-particle formulation of effective edge theories for the fractional quantum Hall effect. Fundamental quasi-particles for the Laughlin state with filling fraction ν = 1 3 are edge electrons of charge −e and edge quasi-holes of charge + e 3. These quasi-particles satisfy exclusion statistics in the sense of Haldane. We exploit algebraic properties of edge electrons to derive a k...

Semiclassical Droplet States in Matrix Quantum Hall Effect

We derive semiclassical ground state solutions that correspond to the quantum Hall states earlier found in the Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix theory. They realize the Jain composite-fermion construction and their density is piecewise constant as that of phenomenological wave functions. These results support the matrix theory as a possible effective theory of the fractional Hall effect. A crucial r...

A Novel Conformal Field Theory Approach to Bulk Wave Functions in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

In this thesis, a novel approach is proposed to represent bulk wave functions of fractional quantum HALL states in terms of conformal field theory correlators. It starts from the LAUGHLIN states and their generalization following JAIN’s picture of composite fermions. These effective particles are naturally identified within the b/c-spin conformal field theories. The enigmatic phenomenon of frac...
